The northern pintail is so named for its pin-like tail feathers. These long, skinny plumes accentuate the pintail's slender build. It's an elegant duck, with males typically sporting a chocolate-brown head, a blue-grey bill and a white neck with combinations of black, grey and white along the back, and a blackish-green patch called the "speculum" shimmering from grey wings.
In contrast, the female's colouring is far more muted to provide critical camouflage while nesting, but her bronze speculum and mottled brown feathers have an understated elegance all their own.
The pintail is a fast and agile flyer. It's one of the first migratory birds to return to its Canadian nesting grounds after wintering in the south. The greatest numbers breed on the prairies and in the western Arctic, where birders can delight in the graceful duck they affectionately call the "Greyhound of the Air."This coin is the latest addition in our popular series of bird coins.
Coin was designed by Canadian artist Trevor Tennant and features a pair of northern pintails which have made the arduous journey home to their Canadian habitat.
Coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded maroon clamshell with black beauty box.

The Lady Blunt Stradivarius violin of 1721 is a violin made by Italian luthier Antonio Stradivari of Cremona, Italy. The violin is named after its first known owner Lady Anne Blunt, daughter of Ada Lovelace, granddaughter of Lord Byron.
The Lady Blunt is one of the two best-preserved Stradivarius violins in existence. It has survived, like the Messiah Stradivarius of 1716, in near-original condition since it has resided mostly in the hands of collectors and seen little use.
This violin was sold at auction by Sotheby's in 1971 for the then-record amount of £84,000 (US$200,000).
In 2008 it was sold to the Nippon Music Foundation for over US$10 million in a private transaction. The Lady Blunt was sold by Tarisio Auctions on their 20 June 2011 online auction for £9.8 million (US$15.9 million), more than four times the previous auction record for a Stradivarius, held by the Molitor when it sold for US$3.6 million in 2010. The proceeds will go to the Nippon Foundation's Northeastern Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Fund. When it went up for sale it was called "the best-preserved Stradivarius to be offered for sale in the past century".

An affordable 0.5 gram pure gold coin is available from the Royal Canadian Mint with the release of the 2014 25c Proof Chipmunk Gold Coin.
Shown on the reverse of the new release is an image of a single eastern chipmunk.
Take a walk in any forest in eastern Canada and you are likely to spot an eastern chipmunk scurrying about in search of food. Acorns and nuts are its favourites, and it can pack away a surprising amount using the expandable pouches in its cheeks.
Susanna Blunt’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II is found on the obverse of the legal tender release. Inscriptions include "ELIZABETH II" and "D G REGINA."
The image of the chipmunk is the work of Canadian artist Tony Bianco. It shows the small rodent in a classic side profile stance. The contrasting stripes along the creatures back can easily be seen along with its most prized treasure in its hands — an acorn. Inscriptions on the reverse include "CANADA," "2014," "25 CENTS" and the artist’s initials of "TB."

The Royal Canadian Mint have launched their second silver coin which highlights the five Great lakes in North America, and this series began last year with the first coin dedicated to Lake Superior.
The Great Lakes situated between the countries of Canada and the United States are the world’s largest system of fresh surface water. Its five lakes, that of Superior, Huron, Michigan, Erie and Ontario - are visible from the moon and hold about 20 percent of the world’s freshwater supply.
The new coin highlights the smallest of the great lakes, that of Lake Ontario – and, as opposed to the lake being named in honor of the Province of Ontario – the province was named for the lake. In the Wyandot (Huron) language, ontarío means “Lake of Shining Waters”. Lake Ontario is the only one of the five Great Lakes not to share a shoreline with the state of Michigan and is the easternmost of the Great Lakes with the smallest in surface area at 7,340 sq. miles or 18,960 km.
The obverse showcases a portrait of Queen ELIZABETH II unique and distinct to the coins of Canada which was designed by Susanna Blunt and in use since 2003. Inscriptions surrounding the portrait include "ELIZABETH II" and "D G REGINA."
The coin’s reverse design includes an application as with the first coin - raised texture representing land against a translucent enamel filled lake. The coin includes an interpretation of the bathymetric depths below the lake surface based on data from the Canadian Hydrographic Service. Inscriptions include "20 DOLLARS," "2014," "LAKE ONTARIO" and "LAC ONTARIO".

The fourth edition of the successful butterfly series is here. It shows the Gold-banded Forester (Euphaedra neophron). It sits, virtually lifelike, in a winged 3D-technique on the silver coin and looks like it could fly away at any moment. The Gold-banded Forester is a member of the Nymphalidae family and is found in eastern and southern Africa. This graceful butterfly is mostly seen in dense tropical forests throughout the year.
The main flight time lies between February and July. Even as a caterpillar, the Gold-banded Forester shows a remarkable array of colours. Following metamorphosis, it presents itself as a magnificent butterfly of an impressive size. The female’s wingspan reaches up to 78 mm.
The delicate wing colouring runs from the inside outward and from light to dark blue. The broad orange-black stripes on the wing tips and the beautiful metallic shimmer create the characteristic play of colours of the Gold-banded Forester.
