The Portuguese Red Cross commenced its activities in 1865 under the name of "Temporary Committee for Aid, the Wounded and the Ill in Times of War". Over the years it has performed an important humanitarian and social aid mission in defence of life, health and human dignity.
INCM is marking 150 years of history of this institution with a commemorative 2 Euro circulation coin, created by sculpture artist António Marinho, who designed a hand grabbing the symbol of the Red Cross for the coin's Portuguese face, alluding to its humanitarian actions and aid provided to the most vulnerable.
