The fifth coin in the six-coin Australia Map Shaped Coin Series from The Perth Mint features the iconic koala, one of Australia’s most recognisable marsupials.
One of the most recognisable symbols of Australia, the beloved koala is perfectly adapted for its environment. With its grey fur and bear-like appearance, this marsupial lives in trees and feeds only on a specific type of eucalypt leaf.
Previous releases: Emu, Kookaburra, Kangaroo and Platypus
Forthcoming release: Saltwater Crocodile
The coin’s coloured reverse depicts a koala carrying a baby joey against picturesque bush scenery and eucalypt trees. The inscription KOALA also appears in the design with The Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark and the 2014 year-date. The coin is innovatively struck in the shape of Australia.
Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the monetary denomination are depicted on the coin’s obverse.
The coin is housed in a grey presentation case and custom-designed shipper. Each coin is accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
