Last year the Perth Mint released the first in a new series of coins called ‘Australias Remarkable Reptiles’. Starting last year with the excellent Frilled Neck Lizard, this series of one-ounce proof silver coins follows the Perth Mints most popular format, a 40mm coloured round in a nice case with a coloured shipper.
The colouring of this distinctive lizard helps to camouflage it from predators, and the sharp spines or thorns which cover the length of its body protect it from any attacks. This fearsome looking creature is a magnificent addition to this popular series celebrating Australia's remarkable reptiles.
Issued as legal tender under the authority of the Government of Tuvalu, the obverse of the coin depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the monetary denomination and the 2014 year-date.
The coin’s reverse portrays a coloured Thorny Devil in defence mode, bordered by a montage of exotic reptile skin patterns. The design also incorporates the inscription THORNY DEVIL LIZARD.
