The Royal Mint has celebrated Big Ben’s distinctive sound which brings in the New Year, by creating a new £100 coin featuring the iconic clock tower.
The body permitted to manufacture coins in the UK has produced only 50,000 of the commemorative pieces, which feature the monument recently renamed Elizabeth Tower on their underside. As with all Royal Mint coins, they will also feature the Queen's portrait.
Created in Llantrisant, Rhondda Cynon Taf, South Wales, the coins contain two ounces (56 g) of silver and are 40mm (1.6in) in diameter.
The coins, which are available for the face value cost of £100, are expected to be popular after a £20 coin celebrating the birth of Prince George sold out. It can be purchased exclusively from The Royal Mint's website.
Shane Bissett, the Royal Mint's director of commemorative coin, bullion and medals, told the Daily Mail: “The sound of Big Ben chiming in the Elizabeth Tower is one that will have become synonymous with Britain for millions of British citizens and tourists alike, particularly on New Year's Eve when the world listens for Big Ben, which marks Greenwich Mean Time, to chime in the New Year.
"So it is a fitting choice for the nation's first £100 coin, and this is a fitting time for us to reveal it."
The coins are official legal tender, but will not be in general circulation and are intended as collectors' items.

Referred to as the most decisive naval battle of World War I, the Battle of the Falkland Islands gave the allies a much-needed surge of confidence on the seas which was especially important because other areas of the war such as Gallipoli, were not proceeding as hoped. The Battle also represented one of the last important instances of old-style naval warfare, between ships and sailors and their guns alone, without the aid or interference of airplanes, submarines or underwater minefields.
The design on the coin features the fast light cruiser HMS Glasgow, one of the key ships in the battle, surround by bomb water explosions and the date of the battle.
Available in Base metal, the coin features a couped effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, Lord of Mann, by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS.

In this festive image that highlights Canada's rural experience, we see the rolling hills and show-covered boreal landscape familiar to people across Canada. On the left of the coin, a quaint country house with sharply peaked roof and screened-in porch anchors the rich scene. A snowy path, recently shovelled, leads from the viewer to the home, curving from the centre of the reverse field's bottom toward the house. Along the pathway, we meet, first, a waving, top-hatted snowman wearing a warm scarf and holding a wrapped gift box under one tree-branch "arm," and then an old-fashioned letter box decorated with a holiday wreath. Opposite the house is a large conifer covered in snow and decorated with glass holiday balls. Behind the house, in the central background, we see the end of a dock jutting out over a frozen, snow-covered lake. Human footprints lead from the front door of the house, down across the lake and—in the far distance—toward a neighbouring home on the distant shore. The meandering shoreline is lined with bare deciduous trees and snow-covered pines. On the horizon, snowy hills dotted with conifers draw the eye upward, toward a sky in which three lone birds fly. The outer frame of the image also features a stylized gift box, festively wrapped for the holiday season.
Packaging:Your coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint-branded maroon clamshell with a custom beauty box.
