The Perth Mint is pleased to release the latest design in the 2014 Land Down Under series.

Isolated locations, slippery and uneven surfaces, and the unpredictable nature of the ocean, make rock fishing the most dangerous sport in Australia.  Yet despite many reports which detail fishermen being swept to their untimely demise, the exhilaration of the pastime makes it an extremely popular activity across Australia and New Zealand.

Rock fishing involves fishing straight into the sea from a rocky outcrop or platform, submerged rocks, rock faces and rocks that emerge from the water’s edge.

Each coin is struck from 1/4oz of 99.99% pure gold in proof quality.

The reverse of the coin depicts a fisherman and his son fishing from a rock platform. The inscriptions THE LAND DOWN UNDER and ROCK FISHING also appear in the design with The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.

Issued as Australian legal tender, the coin’s obverse depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the 2014 year-date, and the monetary denomination.

The Perth Mint will issue no more than 1,000 of The Land Down Under – Rock Fishing 2014 1/4oz Gold Proof Coin.

Each coin is housed in a contemporary Australian map-shaped latex case within a stylised shipper, and is accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.

1 oz. Fine Silver Coin - Ice Dancer

1 oz. Fine Silver Coin - Ice Dancer

From our first glide across the ice, we’re hooked. Faster than our feet alone can carry us, we chase, explore, and spend laughing moments with our friends and family. There will be bumps, bruises, and wobbly knees, but before we know it, the hands once occupied in helping us up off the ice will clap as we glide along unaided. Inspired by his own daughter’s experience, these were the moments Douglas R. Laird had in mind when he painted the delightful scene captured on this coin; enjoying fond family memories and encouraging young dreamers to follow their passion.

While ice skating has been a favourite winter pastime in Canada for hundreds of years, figure skating has grown as a Canadian passion over the last century. The power, grace, and beauty of ice dancers, pairs, and solo skaters ignite the imagination and inspire thousands of children each year to participate in one of the country’s many world-class skating programs.

A thoughtful gift for the young skater in your life or to celebrate a special occasion! Order yours today!

1 oz. Fine Silver Coin - Ice Dancer

1 oz. Fine Silver Coin - Ice Dancer

Design:

Your coin features a full-colour painted and engraved scene of a family skating on a frozen pond. Based on an original painting by Laird, the design centres on a mother, father, son, and daughter attired in outdoor clothing, laced into their skates, and accompanied by two dogs. Standing on a frozen pond with a tree-lined residential area and bridge visible in the background, the mother, father, and boy watch the young girl raise her arms like a graceful figure skater. The young boy holds his hockey stick as he watches his sister. Large snowflakes fall gently around the family.

Niue 2014 1$ Kingfisher The Fascinating World of Birds Proof Silver Coin

Niue 2014 1$ Kingfisher The Fascinating World of Birds Proof Silver Coin

It’s the first coin of the series displaying beauty and diversity of birds from around the world. It’s a .999 silver piece struck to a flawless proof quality. The coin features an eye-catching pad printed image of a kingfisher, with its true colors well preserved. Only 2014 silver coins have seen the world, each presented in an attractive packaging.

Traditionally, the coin bears a portrait of Her Majesty Elizabeth II, surrounded by the following inscriptions: the Queen’s name, the face value of the coin, its metal fineness, issuing country and year.

On the beautifully illustrated reverse, one can see two kingfishers, small blue and orange birds that live both in wetlands and woodlands throughout Europe and Asia. The vivid colors of their feathers seem to be blue, green and orange depending on the angle at which they are viewed. These birds feed mainly on fish, which they catch by perching on a branch overhanging the water, and plunging into the water when a prey appears within striking distance. The legends on the reverse include the series name and the bird’s names in Polish and Latin. Discover a new fascinating series of bird coins, certain to catch the eye of collectors and simply nature lovers!

New Coins Celebrate 100th Anniversary of the Birth of Dylan Thomas

New Coins Celebrate 100th Anniversary of the Birth of Dylan Thomas

The Treasury of Alderney has launched three new coins which celebrate the centenary of the birth of writer and poet Dylan Thomas (1914 – 1953). Popular both in his homeland of Wales and internationally, Dylan Thomas’ works have been performed and enjoyed for decades, and include the ‘play for voices’ Under Milk Wood, the haunting poem Do not go gentle into that good night and the popular tale A Child’s Christmas in Wales.

Meaning ‘son of the waves’, Dylan’s name originates from the Welsh mythical ‘Mabinogion’ tales, and there could be no more fitting a name for the tempestuous character. Thomas was born in Swansea, Wales, in 1914, and although an undistinguished pupil, he left school at 16, becoming a journalist for a short time. While many of his works appeared in print while he was still a teenager, it was the publication of “Light breaks where no sun shines”, in 1934, that caught the attention of the literary world. Although Thomas was appreciated as a popular poet in his lifetime, he found earning a living as a writer difficult, which resulted in his augmenting his income with reading tours and broadcasts. His radio recordings for the BBC during the latter half of the 1940s brought him to the public’s attention and he was used by the Corporation as a populist voice of the literary scene. Thomas traveled to America, where his readings brought him a level of fame. His time in America cemented Thomas’ legend, where he recorded to vinyl A Child’s Christmas in Wales. During his fourth trip to New York in 1953, Thomas became gravely ill and fell into a coma from which he did not recover. He died on the 9th November 1953 and his body was returned to Wales where he was buried at the village churchyard in Laugharne.

New Coins Celebrate 100th Anniversary of the Birth of Dylan Thomas

The coin is struck by the Royal Mint on behalf of the Treasury of Alderney and is designed by senior Royal Mint engraver Lee R. Jones who has captured his true persona with the instantly recognizable three quarter facing portrait of Dylan complete with his wild hair and wide eyes. Other touches, such as the ferns that recall the well-known poem Fern Hillwhich are delicately detailed on both sides of the portrait. His name “DYLAN THOMAS” is boldly positioned just above the portrait with the years of his birth and death on each side along the upper rim. The obverse side includes an effigy of HM Queen Elizabeth II as created by Ian Rank-Broadley and in use on British, British Isles and some commonwealth nations coinage since 1998.

TYROL SILVER COIN

TYROL SILVER COIN

TYROL SILVER COIN

No other Austrian province is as resonant outside Austria as the Tyrol. Its famous feathered hats are partly responsible for that; so too are its soaring alpine peaks, which captured the world’s imagination during the 1976 Winter Olympics in the provincial capital, Innsbruck. For many those peaks represent the archetypical Austrian landscape, but the Tyrol is far more than that. Steeped in culture, it is Austria’s third largest province and the only one split into two parts, North and East Tyrol. The sixth coin in our educational Austria Piece by Piece series, which was co-designed by the country’s school children, celebrates this enchanting land.

A folkloric dance festival recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage is depicted in intricate detail on the coin’s obverse. Known as the ‘Telfer Schleicherlaufen’, the festival takes place every five years in the town of Telfs and is famous for its distinctive hats. Telfs is shown in the background nestling under a rugged peak, while the alpine theme is continued on the coin’s reverse in the winning collage from the school competition to co-design the coin. In its centre, next to other famous Tyrolean symbols, lies a different kind of headgear – what else but a Tyrolean hat!

NEW RELEASE – KIWI DEATH FROM ABOVE HITS SILVER

NEW RELEASE – KIWI DEATH FROM ABOVE HITS SILVER

Have a look at this picture. It’s an eagle attacking a flightless bird called a moa. Now imagine that a six-foot tall human being barely comes up to the base of the Moa’s neck and you’ll get some idea of just how phenomenal the Haast’s Eagle truly was. This isn’t a Tweety that’s scared of Sylvester. It’s a Tweety that rips out Sylvesters throat and devours him piece by bloody piece.

Despite the coin series being named ‘Prehistoric Animals’, this death from the skies only went extinct around 600 years ago from it’s native New Zealand because the Maori stuck the Moa in the cooking pot. It just goes to prove that greed and stupidity aren’t confined to modern human history. We’ve been dumb and short-sighted for ages.

The coin itself is the second in the series, following on from the Smilodon, a huge saber-toothed cat. Ironically, that would’ve been the Sylvester to put the Haasts Eagle back in it’s place but it went extinct millenia before and thousands of miles away. Like the Smilodon release, the coin is limited to just a thousand pieces. It’s issued for Gabon, a first for Numiscollect, and unlike the first coin in the series that was issued for the Ivory Coast. Numiscollect make some nice coins and this series ranks amongst those. It’s a pity that they don’t go all in and make a 45mm, one-ounce, 0.999 silver version rather than this smaller 20g of 0.925 effort, but it’s nice regardless. Doesn’t quite show the sheer scale of this six-foot high bird, but it’s attractive and likely well-struck with quite a cool obverse. Available soon.

EAGLE HARPAGORNIS MOOREI

This coin is part of series PREHISTORIC WILDLIFE
Haast’s Eagle (Harpagornis moorei) is an extinct species of eagle that once lived on the South Island of New Zealand, commonly accepted to be the Pouakai of Maori legend.[1] The species was the largest eagle known to have existed. Its prey is suspected to consist of moa. This eagle’s massive size may have been an evolutionary response to the size of its prey, as both would have been much smaller when they first came to the island, and would have grown larger over time due to lack of competition (see island gigantism). Haast’s Eagle became extinct around the year 1400, when its major food source, the moa, were hunted to virtual extinction by Maori, and much of its dense-forest habitat was cleared.

Key Selling Points:
Animals from the past everyone knows
Colorful design
Low mintage
Interesting country of issue

Royal Canadian Mint Commemorates 75th Anniversary Of Declaration Of The Second World War With Two-Dollar Circulation Coin

Coin features iconic Wait for Me, Daddy photograph

Royal Canadian Mint Commemorates 75th Anniversary Of Declaration Of The Second World War With Two-Dollar Circulation Coin

NEW WESTMINSTER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, OCTOBER 4, 2014 – No other photograph in Canadian history is as widely known as Wait for Me, Daddy, nor did any other capture so poignantly the impact of the war effort on the lives of Canadians. In commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the declaration of the Second World War, the Royal Canadian Mint was proud to unveil a new circulation two-dollar coin bearing this iconic image, during the City of New Westminster's ceremonial reveal of the Wait for Me, DaddyWar memorial sculpture, which was held today.

"The Mint has embarked on an extensive coin program that will last until 2020, to commemorate the many aspects of Canada's experience, at home and on the battlefield, during the First and Second World Wars," said Marc Brûlé, Interim President and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint. "This new circulation coin furthers our proud tradition of remembering the many sacrifices of Canadians at times of war."

The reverse image is inspired by the iconic photograph Wait for Me, Daddy, which was taken on October 1, 1940, in New Westminster by photographer Claude Dettloff. The men of the B.C. Regiment, the Duke of Connaught's Own Rifles, formed an impressive line as they marched down the street. In the centre of the image, a pale-haired young boy, Warren "Whitey" Bernard, has broken free of his mother's grasp to reach out to his uniformed father, who is marching off to war.

Limited to a mintage of five million coins, Canadians can start looking for the Wait for Me, Daddy two-dollar circulation coin in their change, attend coin exchanges at special events in select locations across Canada, as well as at the Mint's Ottawa, Winnipeg and Vancouver boutiques, or obtain limited quantities through an online coin exchange at www.mint.ca/waitformedaddy (limited to Canada only).  Related numismatic products will also be available for pre-sale on mint.ca as of October 4th.
