The paper note of BGN 2 will be replaced with a coin in 2015, according to Bulgaria's National Bank sources cited by Standart News.
The new coin will be made of two metals just like the BGN 1, but unlike it the inner part will be yellow and the outer circle will be white.
The BGN 2 coin will be slightly larger and will portray Saint Paisius of Hilendar, a key Bulgarian National Revival figure, Standart News informs.
Paper notes will continue to be used for a certain period of time, however the damaged bills will be withdrawn from circulation, Bulgarian National Bank stated.

The Imprensa Nacional Casa da Moeda (INCM) have launched their latest collector coin which marks both Portugal’s anniversary as a Republic and 100 years since the country’s first commemorative coin was issued. The inventive coin has a range of unique technical and visual features which includes a gold disc set into the rim of a larger silver disc using an innovative minting process. Due to the specific way in which the two discs fit together, the smaller disc protrudes over the perimeter of the larger one, resulting in the world’s first eccentric (not placed centrally) bimetallic coin.
Portugal celebrates the 5th October as Revolution day which overthrew King Manuel II of the Braganza dynasty and established the Republic. The escudo was introduced on the 22nd May 1911, after the revolution, to replace the Real at the rate of 1,000 réis to 1 escudo. Between 1912 and 1916, silver 10, 20 and 50 centavos and 1 escudo coins were issued. On the 4th anniversary of the Revolution, a beautiful silver coin was issued, which included a reclining allegorical figure representing the Republic and with the country’s anniversary date “5 OUITUBRO de 1910” on the obverse. The crest of the new republic along with the coin’s denomination was seen on the reverse. The year 2014 marks 100 years since the Republic’s first commemorative coin was issued. This historical milestone forms part of the genesis of the INCM and is being celebrated with the issue of the innovative new coin.
Designed by Nuno Caetano, the obverse of the silver portion is a faithful copy of the obverse design of the coin issued in 1914, the first to bear the face value of 1 escudo. A reproduction of the last commemorative escudo coin (1 gold escudo) is found in the gold area on the obverse, resulting in a single face containing two images.
The coin has a combined weight of 12.8 grams. The INCM are currently accepting pre-orders ahead of the coin’s October 1st official issue date.

The Cougar, also known as the Mountain Lion is the second heaviest cat in the New World after the Jaguar, and ranges over a territory larger than any large wild terrestrial animal in the Western Hemisphere. Found as far down as the southern Andes in South America, many also call the Canadian Yukon their home.
Generally a nocturnal hunter and eating anything from large mammals such as deer, elk, moose, and bighorn sheep, as well as domestic cattle, horses and sheep, they also snack on insects and rodents when the need arises. They’ve also been known to take the occasional munch on humans, but the cougar generally avoids contact wherever possible.
The Cougar is an excellent subject for one of the Royal Canadian Mints (RCM) superb wildlife-themed coins, and they do owe the animal a favour to make up for the average depiction of them on the ‘Canadian Wildlife’ bullion coins from 2012. In my view the RCM has certainly done the business, with some fine artwork, especially on the coloured silver coin which immediately ranks amongst the finest depictions of a big cat on a coin in years.
COUGAR ATOP A MOUNTAIN
The first coin ships this month and cost $89.95 CND. It’s the only silver coin untouched by a follow-on process and as a result is the cheapest in the set.
DESIGN: The coin features a female cougar negotiating a rocky mountain pass. Viewed from her left side, the cougar is presented in full-body detail, each massive muscle in her powerful back legs, shoulders, and fore-paws finely rendered. Her long, counterbalancing tail hangs gracefully behind her and her head is lowered as she uses her exceptional vision to determine the best path through the landscape.
The lower half of the image depicts the massive outcroppings of a barren mountainside. In the background of the upper half of the image we see a few scraggly pine boughs, adding visual interest to the image and balancing the lower half of the design.
COUGAR PERCHED ON A MAPLE TREE
The star of the range for me, superb sculpt of the animal, and perfectly applied selective colouration all combine to produce a top-drawer wildlife coin. Available in October for $99.95.
DESIGN: coin features a female cougar resting silently on a tree limb. The focal point of this beautifully detailed image is the cougar’s intense gaze as she locks her unseen prey in her sights. Her gaze will not leave this unsuspecting target until she is upon it. Her left forepaw and muscular front arm extend down the tree limb, claws extended to ensure her grip. Her entire body curls under her as she gathers her full power to leap.
Beneath the tree limb, her long tail provides the perfect counter-balance, ensuring the uncanny accuracy and distance of her leap. The image is beautifully balanced by the spray of leafy maple branches, transformed to autumnal orange, that provide the cougar with the camouflage that is so essential to her hunting success.
COUGAR POUNCING IN THE SNOW
The only coin in the set not designed by Glen Loates, this Maurade Baynton design holds it own and sits very well with the others. This coin ships in November and will cost $114.95.
DESIGN: features a female cougar leaping through the snow toward her prey. Viewed from the position of the prey animal, this dynamic portrait presents to stunning effect the cougar’s most important hunting tools: her large, powerful fore-paws, highly muscular back legs, long counterbalance tail, strong shoulders for holding down prey, and sharp gaze. In a stylized landscape of snow-covered rocky terrain, she leaps with intense focus toward the viewer.
The cougar is finished in gold plating to bring the intensity of the image to life.

COUGAR GOLD & PLATINUM
These two coins form the part of the larger five-coin subscription set not in the three silver coin subscription. The only disappointment with this set is the repeating of the artwork on the two most expensive coins. It’s a nice design, but even some minor changes, like one roaring with an open mouth perhaps, would have increased appeal. The gold is $279.95, the platinum that ships last IS $299.95.
DESIGN: The gold and platinum coins feature a portrait of a female cougar. The animal’s powerful, intimidating golden eyes ringed in dark tones, blunt muzzle spiked with long whiskers, short round ears, and dense fur are presented in full detail, bringing the intensity of the moment fully to life.

The Monnaie de Paris ploughs on with its five-year series of gold and silver coins commemorating ‘Great French Ships’ with this latest piece featuring a nuclear ballistic missile submarine called ‘Le Redoutable’. Each year they release a coin featuring a sailing ship, a military vessel and a liner. Starting in 2011 with coins featuring the Jeanne D’Arc, The Hermione and the cruise ship, Le France, they continued with a further three in 2012 featuring the La Gloire, L’Amazone and the Pen Duick.
This year has already seen the release of Le Pourquoi Pas? (‘The Why Not’), a sailing ship, and Le Redoutable represents the military vessel, so we only have a liner to come. A previous release in that series from 2011, ‘Le France’, was a quite superb design and won the Best Silver Coin category at the Krause coin of the year awards.
The Redoutable is the first nuclear submarine with a ballistic missile capability to be built in France. It was inaugurated on March 29th, 1967 at Cherbourg in the presence of General Charles de Gaulle. In over 20 years of service it completed 51 patrols of 70 days each and 83,500 hours of diving covering an estimated distance of 1.27 million kilometers. The Redoutable was retired from service on December 13th, 1991. In 2000, she was removed from the water and placed in a purpose-built 136 meter dry dock. She was made into an exhibition over the next two years and opened as a museum ship in a drydock at the Cité de la Mer naval museum in Cherbourg. The Le Redoutable is the largest submarine open to the public in the world.
At 128 metres long and weighing 8,000 tons, the vessel served her country for exactly 20 years filled with 15 officers and 120 sailors. No doubt a fascinating visit to walk the corridors of a vessel such as this.
REVERSE: shows a composition common to all five coins dedicated to military vessels in this collection. The silhouettes of the five vessels of the series are crowned by a blue collar on which is found the face value. An arch of chain links frames the yeardate.
The coins sell for € 53, € 415 and the gold, € 420 and come packaged in a themed shipper. All are available for pre-order now.

The Central Bank of Ireland has issued a Proof 2014 .925 fine silver €15 coin commemorating Irish-American John Philip Holland, inventor of the first modern U.S. submarine.
USS Holland (SS-1) was the United States Navy’s first modern commissioned submarine, and is named for its inventor. The boat was originally named Holland VI, and launched on May 17, 1897. The submarine was officially commissioned by the U.S. Navy on Oct. 12, 1900, at Newport, R.I. Holland’s design was the first to combine an electric motor for submerged travel and an internal combustion engine for use on the surface. Holland also created the first Royal Navy submarine, the Holland 1.
The coin, released Sept. 2, is the first in the Irish Science and Inventions coin series.
The obverse bears the traditional Irish harp design.
The reverse was designed by Mary Gregoriy and features the inventor’s hand poised to complete a technical drawing of the USS Holland, complete with a decorative nautilus spiral.

Aug. 14, the United States Mint began selling the proof and uncirculated quality Lou Hoover First Spouse Gold Coins.
Designs on the $10 gold pieces celebrate Lou, wife of the 31st President of the United States, Herbert Hoover.
All spousal coins are minted from the U.S. Mint facility at West Point, NY, with each one struck in 0.5 ounces of .9999 pure gold. This series that honors wives of U.S. Presidents began in 2007. The 2014 line-up offers designs honoring:
Coin Designs
For this Lou Hoover release, two designs won out among nine design proposals that included four obverses and five reverses.
The selected obverse design, crafted by Susan Gamble and sculpted by Michael Gaudioso, features a portrait of the first lady with surrounding inscriptions of: LOU HOOVER, IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, 2014, 31st, 1929 – 1933, and the mint mark of W.
Reverses, designed by Richard Masters and executed by Jim Licaretz, show a 1920s-era radio, representing Mrs. Hoover achievement of being the first, First Lady to deliver a public radio address. Reverse inscriptions read, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, $10, 1/2 OZ., and .9999 FINE GOLD. The words FIRST PUBLIC ADDRESS APRIL 19, 1929 also appear under the radio.

New coin from popular series History of the Crusades - Frederick II.
The Sixth Crusade started in 1228 as an attempt to regain Jerusalem. It began seven years after the failure of the Fifth Crusade. It involved very little actual fighting. The diplomatic maneuvering of the Holy Roman Emperor, Frederick II resulted in the Kingdom of Jerusalem regaining control of Jerusalem and other areas for fifteen years. The Crusades were a series of religiously sanctioned military campaigns waged by much of Latin Christian Europe, particularly the Franks of France and the Holy Roman Empire during the 11th to 15th century.
Each coin depicting a unique scene from that crusade and the most important commander/leader in that crusade. All finished in Antique making this series a unique piece of history.

National Bank has issued commemorative coins dedicated to the 200th anniversary of Taras Shevchenko.
Taras Shevchenko was a famous Kobza player, poet, prose writer, and artist. The city of Aktau bore his name for a time. Today the city of Fort Shevchenko in Mangistau region of Kazakhstan, which is located on the Mangyshlak peninsula (Cape Tyubkaragan), bears this name.
Obverse: An image of the state emblem of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the central part, composed with Kazakh and Ukrainian ornaments; face value of the coin — «50», and inscription «ТЕҢГЕ» in the lower sector; elements of national ornament, secularly represented at the left and right parts; inscriptions «ҚАЗАҚСТАН РЕСПУБЛИКАСЫ» in state language and «РЕСПУБЛИКА КАЗАХСТАН» in Russian along the circumferences; protruding edge along the circumference.

Putting to rest the debate on printing of one rupee notes, the Law Ministry has opined that the Government of India has all the powers to print currency notes of this denomination.
While the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has the authority to issue bank notes of denominational values of Rs 2, Rs 5, Rs 10, Rs 20, Rs 50, Rs 100, Rs 500, Rs 1,000, Rs 5,000 and Rs 10,000, the one rupee note was printed and issued by the central government.
The Government of India also has the sole right to mint coins of all denominations.
The printing of notes in the denominations of Re 1 and Rs 2 has been discontinued as these denominations have been coinised. However, such notes issued earlier are still in circulation.
