Jugos

Banco de Portugal will put a cupronickel-alloy collector coin into circulation from 22 May 2014, with face value of €2.50, entitled ‘Jugos’ (yokes), within the ‘Portuguese ethnography’ series.

The coin will be distributed to the public through credit institutions and at Banco de Portugal's cash offices.

The ‘Jugos’ coin is only legal tender in Portugal and has the following features:

  • On the obverse: 
    • the front of a yoke;
    • the Portuguese coat of arms;
    • the year of issue.
  • On the reverse: 
    • an ox’s head on a background of lines imitating wood;
    • a yoke’s ornamentation at the top;
    • the face value;
    • the word ‘Portugal’ above the centre;
    • the word ‘Jugos’ (yokes) beneath.
