Salzburg is the latest province to adorn an Austrian Mint coin

Salzburg is the latest province to adorn an Austrian Mint coin

The fifth coin in the Austrian Mints ten-coin series ‘Federal Provinces’ features the beautiful Austrian city of Salzburg. Salzburg’s Old Town (Altstadt) has internationally renowned baroque architecture and one of the best-preserved city centers north of the Alps. Salzburg is noted for its scenic Alpine backdrop, even being the setting for parts of the musical play and film The Sound of Music.

Salzburg was the birthplace of 18th-century composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart back when it was the capital of the Archbishopric of Salzburg, a former ecclesiastical principality in what was then part of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation

This series carries on one side an engraving of something considered to be of “intangible cultural heritage” by UNESCO, in this case Salzburg’s “Old Town”. Hohensalzburg Castle and Mozart feature on the other side’s design, based on the winning entry in a childrens competition.

Due to ship on the 07 May at €36.30, this 16g coin comes in the standard Austrian Mint box. A collectors box is available holding the full ten-coin series, the nine provinces and a final coin with the whole country as it’s subject.

Salzburg’s stunning UNESCO World Heritage old town forms the centrepiece of the coin’s obverse, with the Salzach River in the foreground. The coin’s reverse features a potpourri of typical Salzburg references, including Mozart himself and Hohensalzburg Castle, designed by local schoolgirl Melisa Begic who, as in the case of all the coins in the series, won a school competition, supported by the Ministry of Education, to co-design the coin. Not only Austria’s most emblematic city, Salzburg is also a land of breathtaking natural beauty and one of Austria’s most evocative provinces. Peppered with soaring peaks and picturesque mountain lakes, the neighbouring Salzkammergut is what many foreigners envisage when they think of Austria.
