Gold coin Medicine

Gold coin Medicine

Gold coin Medicine

Painted between 1900 and 1907 to decorate the ceiling of the assembly hall of the University of Vienna, Gustav Klimt’s Faculty Paintings were the Viennese master’s last public commission. Klimt’s critics believed they broke cultural taboos and pushed the boundaries of obscenity, but their sensual beauty is plain to see on Medicine, the fourth coin
in our award-winning Klimt and his Women series.
Gustav Klimt was no stranger to controversy, but the outrage caused by his Faculty Paintings was even debated in the Austrian Parliament and became a political issue. The paintings were never actually used for their intended purpose as Klimt returned his fee and refused to deliver his artworks, which were eventually burnt by the Nazis at the end of the Second World War. A detail from Klimt’s Jurisprudence, in the form of the Eumenides, the Greek deities of vengeance, graces the coin’s obverse. Stylised snakes accentuate Klimt’s customary swirling patterns of the gorgon’s hair in the rectangular centre, while to the right stands the goddess of law. The reverse shows a detail from Medicine as Hygieia, daughter
of the Greek god of medicine, with the Aesculapian snake wound around her arm and the cup of Lethe in her hand. The letter M, the fourth letter in the word “Klimt”, appears at the foot of the coin.

The coin Saint John Paul II

The coin Saint John Paul II

The coin Saint John Paul II

The Servant of God Karol Wojtyła is the saint closest and dearest to the hearts of contemporary Poles. Together with Polish people, John Paul II suffered the hardship of German occupation. Subsequently, hand in hand with his compatriots, he shouldered the heavy burden of Communism.

When on 2nd April 2005 the Vatican sources announced the death of the Pope John Paul II, the followers of the Catholic Church became immersed in deep mourning. Our unique gold-plated silver coin in the shape of a cross, issued on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the death of the Holy Father, reflects the spiritual attachment of the Catholic community to Saint John Paul the Great. There is a small round window in the center of this bar.

The coin 175th Anniversary of the Penny Black Stamp

The coin 175th Anniversary of the Penny Black Stamp

The coin 175th Anniversary of the Penny Black Stamp

Pobjoy Mint is delighted to announce the release of a new Proof Fine 999.9 Gold 1/25 commemorative coin which is issued on behalf of the Isle of Man Government to celebrate the 175th Anniversary of the Penny Black Stamp.

Back in 1990, Pobjoy Mint issue a coin which was recognised as the most innovative coin of its time, and which was awarded no less than three Coin of the Year Awards (COTY) - Best Crown, Most Innovative Coinage and overall Coin of the Year.

The coin in question was produced to commemorate the anniversary of the world's first adhesive stamp which was introduced in Britain in 1840 by famous reformer, Rowland Hill. The stamp made philatelic history, with a beautiful but simple design by Henry Corbould showing the profile of the young Queen Victorial. This stamp became popularly known the world over as the 'Penny Black'.

This year sees the 175th Anniversary of the Penny Black, and to commemorate the event, the 2015 coin is being issued with the same design as the coin released in 1990. The design remains the same showing the image from the stamp, but there is a change in the anniversary date and this year's coin has been issued in various sizes, with the Cupro Nickel and Sterling Silver editions both having the lustrous 'pearl black' finish created from a unique technique employed by Pobjoy Mint to create the beautiful black colour. This year's coin also differs from the original as it portrays a different effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The obverse of the coin carries an incused effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Lord of Mann, by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS.
