The time-honored cultural tradition of Aboriginal storytelling is depicted in a new series of coins from the Royal Canadian Mint.
Available in platinum, gold and silver are coins with reverse designs emblematic of the Legend of Nanaboozhoo. Cyril Assiniboine, a renowned self-taught Ojibwa artist, designed the images of Nanaboozhoo and the associated themes showcased on the coins.
Anishinaabe are Ojibway, Odawa and Algonkin Peoples who share closely related Algonquian languages. Together with other native cultures, the story of Nanaboozhoo has been handed down for centuries from generation to generation.
In very limited mintages, the Legend of Nanaboozhoo releases include:
A left-facing portrait of Nanaboozhoo is featured on the reverse of the 99.95% pure platinum coin along with the inscriptions of 2014, CANADA and 5 DOLLARS. Each is composed in 1/10 ounce of the precious metal, the first single platinum coin of the size from Royal Canadian Mint.
Mintage of the strike is limited to 3,000. Current pricing is shown as CAD $299.95, or US $275.89.
2014 Portrait of Nanaboozhoo Gold Coin
The same basic effigy appears on a pure gold coin as featured on the platinum release. The 99.99% pure gold coins are composed of 3.14 grams of the precious metal versus the smidgen lighter platinum coin’s weight of 3.13 grams.
A mintage of 3,000 also applies to this release. Pricing is listed as CAD $279.95, or US $257.50.
2014 Nanaboozhoo and the Thunderbird Silver Coin
Gold plating adds to the detail on the reverse of the 2014 Nanaboozhoo and the Thunderbird 1 oz Fine Silver Coin. The mythical character is shown in the foreground with an approaching Thunderbird in the background.
Each is struck from one ounce of 99.99% pure silver with the aforementioned added detail of selective gold plating. A mintage of 8,500 has been set with each selling for CAD $114.95, or US $105.73.
2014 Legend of Nanaboozhoo Silver Coin
Reverses of 2014 Legend of Nanaboozhoo 1 oz Fine Silver Coins offer colored enhancements to aid in the detail of the image. Nanaboozhoo is wearing a traditional Western Ojibwa dress as a large Thunderbird soars behind.
These 99.99% pure silver coins have a mintage limit of 8,500 with pricing of CAD $99.95, or US $91.93.

The Bank of Lithuania has issued into circulation a 50 litas collectors (commemorative) silver coin dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the re-establishment of Vytautas Magnus University. The new coin has been presented at Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas.
“While our University is young, it has mature traditions and is continuing them. Born in the spring of the first Independence of the Republic of Lithuania, it served education, science and culture in Lithuania, while the peculiarity of the re-established University is its ability to organise studies, scientific research, University life differently,”— said professor Zigmas Lydeka, Rector of Vytautas Magnus University during the coin's presentation event.
The obverse of the coin features a stylized coat of arms of the Republic of Lithuania, which is surrounded by the inscriptions ****LIETUVA 2014***, 50 LITŲ (LITHUANIA 2014, 50 LITAS). The mintmark of the Lithuanian Mint is impressed on the obverse of the coin.
On the reverse of the coin, the idea of studies ARTES LIBERALES (liberal arts), reaching back to antiquity, is inscribed against the background of a composition of fragments of an open book and an outspread globe. The inscription VYTAUTO DIDŽIOJO UNIVERSITETO ATKŪRIMAS 25 (RE-ESTABLISHMENT OF VYTAUTAS MAGNUS UNIVERSITY 25) is arranged in a circl. Designed by Rolandas Rimkūnas and Giedrius Paulauskis.
On the edge of the coin, UNIVERSITAS VYTAUTI MAGNI * (VYTAUTAS MAGNUS UNIVERSITY) is inscribed.

This coin is the latest release in the “Endangered Species” coin series by New Zealand Mint.
In the early 20th century the Black Rhinoceros, Diceros bicornis, was the most plentiful of all Rhino species across the African continent. Between 1970 and 1992, their numbers were severely reduced by over 95% due to organised poaching and black market demand for their horns. By 1993, only 2,300 survived in the wild. Intensive anti-poaching efforts over recent years have had encouraging results, however, the increase in numbers is slow. In 2013, the IUCN estimated that approximately 5,055 Black Rhinoceros live in Eastern and Central Africa.
This relief engraving captures a delightful vista of the African grasslands. In the foreground, an endangered Black Rhinoceros dips its head to drink from a water hole. The scene is mirrored in the finely engraved water.
This features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

It was the greatest maritime disaster in Canadian history – a tragedy unparalleled by the loss of life and the speed at which the events unfolded. The sinking of RMS Empress of Ireland made headlines around the world in 1914; sadly, the onset of the First World War would quickly overshadow the events that transpired in the waters near Rimouski, Que.
Built in Scotland by the Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company, Empress of Ireland was launched on January 27, 1906. Measuring 172 metres long and 20 metres wide, the Canadian Pacific Railway steamship was widely regarded at the time as one of the fastest and most comfortable passenger ships for the transatlantic journey between England and Canada.
On the afternoon of May 28, 1914, the& Empress left its berth in Quebec's harbour for its first summer voyage to Liverpool. In the early morning hours of May 29, the liner was steaming down the St. Lawrence River near Pointe-au-Père when at 1:40 a.m., the Norwegian collier Storstad was sighted at about eight miles to starboard. Both crews attempted to anticipate one another's course as a thick fog engulfed both ships, forcing Captain Henry George Kendall to bring the Empress to a stop. But minutes later, the Storstad emerged from the fog at a mere 30 metres from theEmpress – it was too late for either ship to alter its course and at 1:55 a.m., the Storstad's reinforced hull ploughed into the centre of the Empress.
The Empress could not withstand such damage to its compartments. Water rushed into the Empress, trapping many passengers inside their cabins. The ship listed sharply on its starboard side, allowing water to pour in through the portholes and rendering it impossible to close most of the watertight doors. The tragedy was further compounded when only a few of the lifeboats were able to be launched before the ship turned over completely on its side. In the span of a mere 14 minutes after the collision, RMS Empress of Ireland had sunk to its final resting place.
Of the 1,477 passengers onboard RMS Empress of Ireland, 1,012 perished including 134 children. For most, the Empress will be forever linked with its tragic end, but it is also remembered for the thousands of immigrants who boarded this great liner to make their journey to a new life in Canada. In 1999, the wreck site was classified as a historical and archaeological property, and it has since earned a protected status as a National Historic Site.
Coin was designed by Canadian artist Yves Bérubé and presents an artistic representation of RMS Empress of Ireland in the final moments leading up to the collision. There is an eerie stillness to the scene as the ship sails along the St. Lawrence River. The thick fog fills the cool night air and enshrouds the ship, extending beyond the image field on both sides. The ship's bow and port side are rendered in beautiful detail, and are faintly illuminated by the light from the ship's windows and portholes. Engraved above the image field is the ship's bell, which sat atop one of the ship's masts. It is perhaps the most well-known artifact to be recovered from the ship's watery grave.

Traditional values are booming at present. And so it is not surprising that the Jass card game is enjoying growing popularity. No other leisure pursuit joins the generations together to the same extent as the popular Swiss card game. According to a survey conducted by the market research institute GfS-Zürich in 2012, 63 % of German-speaking Swiss can play Jass and 41 % do so regularly. For some time playing Jass has been experiencing a real renaissance within the context of the Swissness trend. People are looking increasingly for their traditional roots again. Not in clubs, because they do not want to be tied down. And so, despite the upswing, the established Jass associations, just like many other clubs, have to contend with recruitment problems.
A game of Jass can be played almost everywhere, whether in a pub, a mountain hut, on a train and in many other places. The types of Jass are just as diverse. The most popular form of Jass, the classic variety, is the 'Schieber', the supreme discipline is the 'Differenzler'. Whereas the luck of the cards plays a major role in the former, skill and experience are in demand for the latter. Not only in politics is there a linguistic and cultural divide, but also when playing Jass. The game is played with 'French' cards (hearts, spades, diamonds, clubs) to the west of the Brünig-Napf-Reuss line, as well as in the cantons of Ticino and the Grisons, and with 'German' cards (Schellen, Schilten, Rosen, Eicheln – bells, shields, roses, acorns) to the east of that.

In the event of a ‘Yes’ vote on Scottish independence, a completely new currency would ensure that Scotland is wholly independent. The adoption of a new coinage system would be a logical step. The International Numismatic Agency Ltd (INA) producers of the first British prototype Euro coin sets in 2002 have unveiled their latest set of prototypes for 2014. This is a collection of pattern or prototypecoins consisting of 9 different denominations, which have been proposed by INA Ltd. for use by the citizens of an independent Scotland.
The Scottish Ryal
The Scottish Ryal has been suggested as a new currency unit for Scotland. As a decimal coinage system 1 Ryal would equal 100 Scots Pence. King David I of Scotland (1124-1153) appears to have been the first independent Scottish king to issue coins, and the production of Scottish coins continued until the Act of Union in 1707, a period of nearly 600 years. The Ryal was actually the Scottish unit of currency in use when James VI of Scotland acceded to the English throne in 1603 and Scotland ceased to be a separate kingdom. The Ryal was used extensively during the reign of James’s mother, Mary (‘Queen of Scots’) and Scottish Pennies were a smaller currency unit in use during this period.
Design
This collection of pattern or prototype coins comprises a 5 Ryals, 2 Ryals, 1 Ryal (bi-metallic) 50 Scots Pence, 20 Scots Pence, 10 Scots Pence (Nordic gold) 5, 2 and 1 Scots Pence (copper). The specifications of the Scottish patterns are similar to those of the current euro coins, though not identical.
The 5 Ryals, 2 Ryals and 1 Ryal coins are produced as bi-metallic pieces and feature the famous statue of Sir William Wallace (the Scottish knight who was an early figure in the Scottish wars of independence) positioned outside Edinburgh Castle.
The 50 Scots Pence, the 20 Scots Pence and the 10 Scots Pence coins are minted in Nordic gold and feature an obverse portrait of Robert Burns, Scotland’s national poet and a founder of the Romantic Movement.
Finally, the 5 Scots Pence, 2 Scots Pence and 1 Scots Penny coins are minted in copper and have an obverse rendition of the famous Cutty Sark, built on the Clyde in 1869.
The Scottish Independence referendum will decide if Scotland should become independent of Westminster and essentially dissolve the Union of Great Britain, which officially came into effect during the reign of Queen Anne in 1707. The referendum is to take place on the 18th September of this year. Comments from the “Yes” camp have stated the advantages of a new Scottish currency would be to give a new Scottish nation the power to set its own interest rates, and to allow its currency value to fluctuate – a factor which is considered important in an economy which could be dependent on the price of oil. If an independent Scotland were to seek separate EU membership and eventually adopt the euro, then a series of coins similar to those currently in use in the euro-zone would be helpful and ease any further transition.
