Limited panda for Qingdao Horticultural Expo 2014

The Peoples Bank of China are known to issue many different medals and coins based on the Panda range every year, including specials for such events as the Berlin World Money Fair, the Singapore International Coin Fair and local Chinese Expos. Usually taking the form of a border containing a text title of the event, this one commemorates the Qingdao International Horticultural Exposition 2014 and is available as a one-ounce silver and a quarter ounce gold.

The exposition takes place from April-October 2014 at Baiguo Mountain Forest Park in Qingdao and is expected to play host to around 12 million visitors. The International Horticultural Exhibition is a non-trade global exhibition organized by the government of the host country or a relevant department entrusted by the government. Different from an international trade fair, it is aimed at promoting the economic, cultural, and technology exchanges between countries around the world and their development in such fields. Every participating country may take the opportunity to show other countries what they have achieved in their own fields. Therefore, the International Horticultural Exhibition is celebrated as the “Olympics” for the economic and science & technology circles across the world.

Salzburg is the latest province to adorn an Austrian Mint coin

Salzburg is the latest province to adorn an Austrian Mint coin

The fifth coin in the Austrian Mints ten-coin series ‘Federal Provinces’ features the beautiful Austrian city of Salzburg. Salzburg’s Old Town (Altstadt) has internationally renowned baroque architecture and one of the best-preserved city centers north of the Alps. Salzburg is noted for its scenic Alpine backdrop, even being the setting for parts of the musical play and film The Sound of Music.

Salzburg was the birthplace of 18th-century composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart back when it was the capital of the Archbishopric of Salzburg, a former ecclesiastical principality in what was then part of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation

This series carries on one side an engraving of something considered to be of “intangible cultural heritage” by UNESCO, in this case Salzburg’s “Old Town”. Hohensalzburg Castle and Mozart feature on the other side’s design, based on the winning entry in a childrens competition.

Salzburg is the latest province to adorn an Austrian Mint coin

Due to ship on the 07 May at €36.30, this 16g coin comes in the standard Austrian Mint box. A collectors box is available holding the full ten-coin series, the nine provinces and a final coin with the whole country as it’s subject.

Salzburg’s stunning UNESCO World Heritage old town forms the centrepiece of the coin’s obverse, with the Salzach River in the foreground. The coin’s reverse features a potpourri of typical Salzburg references, including Mozart himself and Hohensalzburg Castle, designed by local schoolgirl Melisa Begic who, as in the case of all the coins in the series, won a school competition, supported by the Ministry of Education, to co-design the coin. Not only Austria’s most emblematic city, Salzburg is also a land of breathtaking natural beauty and one of Austria’s most evocative provinces. Peppered with soaring peaks and picturesque mountain lakes, the neighbouring Salzkammergut is what many foreigners envisage when they think of Austria.

Struck in Special Uncirculated quality and Proof quality in silver, as well as Circulation quality in copper, each with magnificent piece comes with different packing.

A Story of the Northern Lights: Howling Wolf

Royal Canadian Mint have created second coin in the A Story of the Northern Lights series of beautiful hologram coins!

That is the magic of the northern lights, and if you’ve ever experienced them firsthand, you know this incredible phenomenon is really beyond words; shimmering waves of light that can leave you breathless. And if you’ve never seen the northern lights, the captivating colours on this pure silver hologram coin might just inspire you to venture north to watch them “live.”

Out there, standing in the dark, Earth’s great lightshow may take on a whole new dimension if the shimmering ribbons of light are accompanied by the sound of howling wolves. It’s one of the most hauntingly beautiful experiences that the wilderness has to offer; a spectacle so mystifying that generations of sky gazers, adventurers and nature lovers have ventured into the darkness, and long pondered if wolves do indeed howl at the light.

At night, in the dead of winter, light and sound travel much farther, aided by the clear, crisp air. If there’s more light, wolves can also be more active; and as their pack disperses in search of food, they will be calling to each other. Their howls will be amplified by the clear, crisp air, just like the northern lights; and the result for the lucky viewer is a hauntingly beautiful symphony of colour and sound.

A Story of the Northern Lights: Howling Wolf

Coin’s pure silver composition beautifully enhances the wintry scene and showcases the colour hologram to its best effect.

You will adore this coin for its magical representation of the northern lights. It’s a stunning gift that will enthrall sky gazers, nature lovers, art lovers and travellers who have experienced the natural beauty of the North.

Designed by Canadian artist Nathalie Bertin, coin depicts a breathtaking design of northern lights weaving across a winter night sky high above the boreal forest. A lone wolf stands howling in the foreground, the ribbons of light seeming to emerge from its muzzle in tribute to the awesome symphony of colour and sound that results when two of nature’s most mystifying phenomena come together.

Slovakia 10th Anniversary of EU Accession 2 Euro Coin

Slovakia 10th Anniversary of EU Accession 2 Euro Coin

The National Bank of Slovakia have issued a new commemorative 2 Euro coin which marks a very important moment in the country's history — that of its accession into the European Union on the 1stMay 2004.

Slovakia, along with eight Central and Eastern European countries including the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Slovenia - all former communist countries as well as three countries who re-established independence from the former USSR, took part in accession ceremonies held at the official residence of the President of Ireland. Along with two countries in the Mediterranean — Cyprus and Malta, this was the largest single enlargement within the European Union in terms of people and number of countries. Slovakia completed their further integration into the European Union with the adoption of both the Schengen agreement - the abolition of border checks at the signatories' common borders and on the 1st January 2009, adopted the Euro single currency, becoming the only country to do so that year and 16th member state to do so overall.

The coin is struck by the Kremnica Mint and designed by artist Maria Poldaufová.

Slovakia 10th Anniversary of EU Accession 2 Euro Coin

The obverse design includes the stylised letters "EÚ" as the abbreviation of the European Union, with the coat of arms of the Slovak Republic incorporated in the foreground. On the right-hand side of the inner part of the coin, in two lines, is the date of the Slovak Republic's accession to the European Union, "1.5.2004" and immediately below it the year "2014". Inscribed along the bottom edge of the inner part is the name of the issuing country, "SLOVENSKO" while in a semi-circle along the upper edge is the inscription "10. VÝROČIE VSTUPU DO EURÓPSKEJ ÚNIE". To the lower left is the mint mark of Kremnica Mint (composed of the letters "MK" between two dies), and to the lower right are the stylized letters "MP", the initials of the designer. The coin's outer ring bears the 12 stars of the European Union.
