Forming part of the European Series, that elected European Composers as the theme for 2014, the Portuguese coin pays homage to Marcos Portugal (1762–1830), one of the most prolific Portuguese composers ever.
This coin, created by sculptor Paula Lourenço, shows on its obverse the portrait of Marcos Portugal and on its reverse a lyre surrounded by laurel branches, symbolizing the greatness of his musical works.

Due to the extreme differences in height from 195 m above sea level to over 4600 m Switzerland displays a great variety of climates with the corresponding plants and animals. While sitting under decorative palms growing in an almost Mediterranean climate along the shores of Lago Maggiore and Lake Lugano in southern Switzerland you may have a look at mountain peaks covered by eternal snow. Chamois and wild boar, hart, fox and bauson live in the forests, but sometimes they can even be seen at distances of a few hundred feet in the suburbs. The wild hare has become rare.

In 2014, the FIFA World Cup is being hosted in Brazil. This exciting event is closely watched by millions of fans around the globe, intertwining national pride, international sportsmanship and love for a sport that combines endurance, strength, and strategy to the delight of frenzied fans. Canadians, too, are riveted by the FIFA World Cup – including the hundreds of thousands of young people here who play soccer for fun and for sport.
Considered the world’s most popular sport, soccer has also taken hold of Canadians young and old. Although the Dominion of Canada Football Association has been a FIFA member since its formation in 1913 it is largely since the 1980s that soccer’s popularity in Canada has soared, particularly among youth. Beginning in the 1980s, soccer became the Canadian sport with the highest number of registered players, surpassing even hockey. Soccer registration in Canada has continued to outpace hockey registration ever since and remains both the top participatory sport and fastest-growing sport in Canada. Today, the Canadian Soccer Association boasts nearly 1 million registered soccer players in Canada, the majority of whom are under the age of 19 and almost half of whom are female.
With this dynamic global sport inspiring the passion of young Canadians, it is no surprise that Canada’s international status in soccer has seen an upsurge over the last two decades. The Canadian men’s national soccer team participated in both the 1986 FIFA World Cup and the FIFA Confederations Cup 2001. The Canadian women’s national soccer team has played at 5 FIFA Women’s World Cups. Canada will host the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2015.

Coin was designed by Canadian artist Steve Hepburn and presents a dynamic stylized pastiche of soccer images. Dominating the image is a soccer player, right leg thrown back to make a powerful kick. The player’s target is a large soccer ball upon which a map of Canada replaces one of the dark patches. Below the image of the player, three young children play soccer in a field of grass—a boy prepares to kick the ball while two girls approach him from either side; all the young players are dressed in the sport’s recognizable uniform of long shorts, jersey, tall socks, and soccer cleats. In the upper right corner of the image, backed by a cheery yellow sunburst, a large stylized image of a Canadian crowd, arms extended to the sky, waving flags and pennants and flanked by swirling maple leaves, is reminiscent of the building wave of enthusiasm for the sport. The background is dominated by the well known green of the soccer pitch along with colourful ‘swoosh’ marks flying from behind the ball and complex line patterns recalling soccer nets.

One of the most popular types of coins struck by the Perth Mint are their high-relief ones. These coins are struck deeper into a thicker planchet (blank) to increase the distance between the highest and lowest points of the coins artwork. The result is a design that has an almost three-dimensional quality and done right they’re some of the most attractive coins released today.
In the same vein as the recent and beautiful John Mercanti designed Wedge Tailed Eagle high relief silver coin, this latest one-ounce 0.999 silver coin carries one of the most impressive of the Birds of Prey, the simply magnificent Bald Eagle.
The artist for this portrait is Perth Mint resident Ing Ing Jong, who was also responsible for such recent releases as the hit 2014 Stock Horse, the 2014 Australian Gold Sovereign and last years Lunar Snakes. The American coin dealer SilverTowne has the exclusive rights to distribute the coin but we’re currently trying to determine if that’s for the full 5,000 mintage, or if, like the aforementioned Wedge-Tailed Eagle, a portion of the run will be sold by the Perth Mint at a later date.
The Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) is a sea eagle found in North America. Its range includes most of Canada and Alaska, all of the contiguous United States, and northern Mexico. It is found near large bodies of open water with an abundant food supply and old-growth trees for nesting.
The Bald Eagle is both the national bird and national animal of the United States of America. The Bald Eagle appears on its Seal. In the late 20th century it was on the brink of extirpation in the continental United States. Populations recovered and the species was removed from the U.S. federal government’s list of endangered species on July 12, 1995 and transferred to the list of threatened species. It was removed from the List of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife in the Lower 48 States on June 28, 2007.
Along with a portrait of an American Bald Eagle, the coin’s reverse also includes the inscription AMERICAN BALD EAGLE, The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark, and the coin’s weight and fineness.
The coin’s obverse depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the monetary denomination, and the 2014 year-date.

Spanish UNESCO World Heritage Sites series:
Spain started the commemorative coin series Patrimonio de la Humanidad de la UNESCO (UNESCO World Heritage) in 2010, commemorating all of Spain's UNESCO World Heritage Sites, which could continue until 2050. The order in which the coin for a specific site is issued coincides with the order in which they were declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Houseflies have dark gray or gray and yellow bodies with dark lines. The main part of their body has 8 segments in males and 9 segments in females. Females have 5 segments of their abdomen visible all the time. She sticks out the other 4 when she lays her eggs. This way, she can lay eggs under the surface. Females are a little bit bigger than males. Like all flies, they only have one pair of translucent wings for flying and the second pair are only used for balance. Houseflies are 4 to 8 mm long, and are 6.35 mm long on average.
Houseflies eyes are compound organs that are comprised of thousands of individual lenses. Compound eyes are capable of detecting both the polarization of light and color spectrums unseen by humans. Houseflies eyes can recognize even the slightest ovements in a wide field. This allows the fly to see a far wider range, as well as detect and react to movement at a quicker pace than species with simple eyes. This is the reason that it is extremely difficult to swat a housefly. Houseflies are meticulous in their grooming, particularly around their eyes. These flies use their forelegs to remove any material that has come into contact with the eyes.

On 24 April 2014, Narodowy Bank Polski is putting into circulation three “Centenary of the birth of Jan Karski” coins with face values of PLN 200, PLN 10 and PLN 2.
Jan Kozielewski went down in history under the alias of Jan Karski. He was a talented son of a craftsman from Łódź, member of the Sodality of Our Lady. He graduated from the Faculty of Law and Diplomacy at the Jan Kazimierz University in Lvov. After the outbreak of World War II he was first in Soviet and later in German captivity. He managed to escape from both and at the end of 1939 he went underground. Due to his knowledge of foreign languages, physical fitness and qualifications he was entrusted with the role of emissary of the Polish Underground State. During one of the missions, Karski was captured by the Gestapo in Slovakia but was rescued by members of the underground when staying in hospital in Nowy Sącz. In autumn 1942, Karski entered the Warsaw Ghetto and the interim camp of Izbica illegally. He carried microfilms with reports on the situation of Jews in a hollowed-out key (he kept a replica of the key in his archive donated to the Hoover Institution in Stanford, USA).
After World War II, Jan Karski lived in exile in the United States and withdrew from political life. He studied political science and received a Ph.D. at Georgetown University in Washington, where he became a lecturer. In 1985 he published The Great Powers and Poland, 1919–1945: From Versailles to Yalta. When his unusual history was recalled in the hours-long film Shoah, Karski resumed the subject of the Holocaust and recounted his war mission at the lectures. Being a man of deep religious faith, he was always looking for the sense of history, of which he was a part.
Jan Karski lived to see his recognition – he was bestowed, among others, with the Righteous Among the Nations title, conferred the Order of the White Eagle, and, posthumously – the highest civilian award of the United States.This is what Zbigniew Brzeziński said of Karski: … his place is on the first pages of Poland’s contemporary history. He represents all that is the most beautiful, and the most admirable in the history of World War II.

The 22nd Winter Olympic Games were held in the Russian city of Sochi on the Black Sea shore at the Caucasus foothills between 7 and 23 February 2014. They were the second Olympic Games held in Russia and the first Winter Olympic Games held in the country.
The venue was divided into two parts – the sports grounds were situated in Sochi and in the mountain sport centre Krasnaya Polyana. After the Winter Olympic Games the Winter Paralympic Games 2014 are scheduled for the same venue.
The author of the silver gilded commemorative medal Petr Horák placed the Fisht Olympic stadium in Sochi on the obverse side of the medal (in Russian Олимпийский стадион «Фишт» – "Fisht" Olympic Stadium). This modern stadium was the venue of the opening and the closing ceremonies of the 22nd Winter Olympic Games in Sochi and of the traditional decorating of the winning athletes with Olympic medals. The capacity of this modern sports tabernacle is 40,000 spectators.

The Perth Mint is pleased to celebrate 100 years of Australian submarines with the release of this beautiful commemorative Centenary of Australian Submarines 2014 1oz Silver Proof Coin & Replica Badge Set.
The reverse of the coin features a coloured representation of a submarine cruising through the ocean. The ocean is portrayed as breaking through two concentric circular rope features that are derived from the Royal Australian Navy Submarine Service ship’s badge.

The coin that seems to have created the greatest buzz amongst the more than two-dozen new ones released this month by the Royal Canadian Mint is the latest piece in it’s Venetian Glass range. Despite upping the mintage by 2,500 from last years 10,000, it’s already sold out and the first three coins in the range are selling with hefty premiums. It’ a strange situation because many numismatic collectors genuinely despise the more gimmicky end of the market but still like these. Without doubt it’s a beautifully done piece and takes full advantage of the process. The latest frog coin is probably the best yet.
Found in every Canadian province and Territory except Yukon and Nunavut, the leopard frog is aptly named for the irregularly shaped black spots that dot its brown, greenish-brown, or green skin. It lives in a variety of habitats including wetlands in prairies and woodlands in summer for feeding. In the fall it usually moves to ponds, streams, and rivers which do not freeze to the bottom. In the spring it emerges to seek out ponds and marshes for breeding. It is there that the tadpoles will develop.
The leopard frog consumes nearly any animal that fits in its mouth, be it insects, worms, smaller frogs and even birds or garter snakes. The hunter becomes the hunted if it encounters predators such as fish, water snakes, turtles, herons, raccoons or even larger frogs.
The coin was designed by Canadian artist Maurice Gervais and features an engraved and painted Yellow Pond Lily (Nuphar variegatum) that occupies the left side of the image field. The blossom is in fool bloom, its outer cup shaped petals opened to reveal the circular pattern of stamens cradled inside. A stunning, translucent green Leopard Frog made of Venetian glass and hand-crafted by Giuliano Donaggio – a master glassmaker in Murano, Italy – sits upon the engraved and coloured green lily pad leaf in the right portion of the image field.
Murano glass is world-renowned for its bright colours, which beautifully showcases the leopard frog upon a full colour, engraved lily pad. The coin is the fourth in a series that pair engraved and painted flowers with a beautifully detailed rendering of a creature that is native to Canada’s natural landscape.
