Voyage to Terra Australis sails onto first coin

Voyage to Terra Australis sails onto first coin

The Royal Australian Mint seeks to introduce a unique, eye-catching, and engaging theme as a figurehead for its gallery press and mintmark collection.

At a much-anticipated event by coin collectors around the country, the Royal Australian Mint has revealed the new theme for its gallery press which this year is honouring the 200th anniversary of the publication of Matthew Flinders’ journal ‘A Voyage to Terra Australis.’

The historic theme of Australian exploration was unveiled to the eager queue that have waited for days and nights outside the Mint’s building for the opportunity to be one of the first 100 in the world to strike a coin in 2014.

“This special new year event is one that is marked on many of our coin collectors’ calendars as it is a rare opportunity to be, what is possibly, the first person in the world to make a coin in 2014,” said Royal Australian Mint CEO Mr Ross MacDiarmid.

The coin design that the dedicated collectors struck today features an intricate $1 uncirculated coin with an artistic impression of Australia and a stylised tall ship in full sail within a compass rose, marking the 200th anniversary of Matthew Flinders’ journal ‘A Voyage to Terra Australis.’

Voyage to Terra Australis sails onto first coin

Matthew Flinders was a remarkable sailor, captain and explorer, his journal recounts a time when Australia was a vast unknown land for European settlers. The journal includes tales of Flinders’ expeditions aboard HMAS Investigator and other vessels, including the first circumnavigation of the Australian continent.

The coin will feature in the Mint’s gallery press for the entire year and all bear a ‘C’ for Canberra mark, making these coins a memento to keep forever, and one that will also be sought after by many collectors.

The Royal Australian Mint seeks to introduce a unique, eye-catching, and engaging theme as a figurehead for its gallery press and mintmark collection. In 2014, we have selected the 1814 publication of Matthew Flinders’ historic journal, A Voyage to Terra Australis, as the inspiration for its latest releases. Through his journal, Flinders recounted his many journeys aboard the HMS Investigator and other vessels – including the first ever successful circumnavigation of the continent of Australia.

100th Anniversary of the Royal Ontario Museum

The Royal Canadian Mint refines the purest silver in the world. The RCM is also the only mint in the world to issue commemorative coins in a .9999 fineness. This one troy ounce silver coin is 99.99% pure!

For 100 years, the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) in Toronto, Ontario, has connected visitors with the natural world around them, as well as the many cultures that have shaped human history.

Obverse: Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, in profile facing right. This portrait, the fourth effigy of the queen to appear on Canadian Coinage, was executed by the artist Susanna Blunt. The legend ELIZABETH II D. G. REGINA (“Elizabeth II, Queen by the Grace of God”) also appears.

100th Anniversary of the Royal Ontario Museum

Reverse includes a gold-plated image of the Statue of Cleopatra VII, a unique piece that was purchased in the early 1900s by the museum’s first director. This ancient granite bust is believed to be a rare, idealized representation of the Egyptian queen whose romantic conquests earned her immortality. Behind the bust, the crystalline-like shape of the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal rises up to fill much of the image field, adding a modern element to the design. Its angled, prismatic structures are rendered in beautiful detail – from the aluminum strips giving the building its brushed metal appearance, to the many windows that capture and reflect light. The museum’s centennial is commemorated above the building with the words “100 YEARS ANS,” while below are engraved the face value of “20 DOLLARS” and the word “CANADA.”

Innovative use of window marks animals in glass debut

Innovative use of window marks animals in glass debut

Numiscollect have some cool new coins due out and this is an early favourite. Windows have been appearing in coins for many years now and some of the most sought after series contain them. In most cases the window represents just that, a window, usually in a coin depicting an architectural style. but in this case it’s been integrated into the coin in a clever way. Depicting a side-on view of the Glasswing on the reverse, flipping over to the obverse has the same window acting as the wing in an overhead view of the same creature. Both simple and clever, the design works really well here and this one could be a real sleeper hit. With it being the first coin in a series, it will be interesting to see where this goes from here.

Innovative use of window marks animals in glass debut

The new series is called ‘Animals in Glass’ and kicks off with a butterfly called the Greta Oto, or Glasswing.

With a Spanish name “Espejitos’, meaning “little mirrors”, the Glasswing butterfly has translucent wings of 5.6-6.1 cm (2.2-2.4″) span with tissue that lacks the coloured scales found in other butterflies. Ranging from Mexico, through Panama and Columbia, this beautiful insect feeds on toxic plants to make itself unpalatable to predators.

The coin will be available around June this year. It will be boxed and supplied with a Certificate of Authenticity to denote which of only 999 pieces you have.

Nanaboozhoo and the Thunderbird's Nest

Storytelling has long been a rich oral tradition for Aboriginal cultures. It is said that from the first snowfall to the first clap of thunder, elders impart history, traditions and life lessons to the younger generation through rich narratives filled with allegories and imagery. For the Aboriginal Peoples, these tales – and the messages they convey – form deep connections to who they are, how they relate to the world, their ceremonial rituals and even everyday life.

Often, these stories revolve around characters that possess physical and personality traits akin to humans, animals, plants and even the elements. For the Anishinaabe, an important cultural character is Nanaboozhoo; as a shapeshifting spirit, he teaches right from wrong through his adventures while offering lessons on how to live in harmony with the natural world.

Nanaboozhoo and the Thunderbird's Nest

Special features:
  •   Coin was designed by Cyril Assiniboine, a renowned self taught Ojibwa artist and a pow wow dancer who enjoys illustrating the cultural traditions of his people.
  •   Coin captures a pivotal scene within the story, in which the hero is pursued by angry Thunderbirds after he has taken feathers from their young.
  •   Each coin in this unique new series pays homage to the time-honoured cultural tradition of Aboriginal storytelling through its depictions of the beloved Ojibwa Legend of Nanaboozhoo.

Designed by Canadian artist Cyril Assiniboine, who is Ojibwa, your coin depicts Nanaboozhoo climbing the highest cliff to get to the Thunderbirds’ nest, where he has plucked feathers from the young birds (seen in the upper right side of the image). But the fully grown Thunderbirds have since returned to the nest and are angered by Nanaboozhoo’s actions. With lightning flashing from a Thunderbird’s eye and thunder rolling from its beak, Nanaboozhoo quickly flees from the Thunderbird’s wrath while clutching the feather-adorned arrow in his right hand.

Swimming Beaver

Castor canadensis played a major role in Canada’s colonial history, becoming one of the primary motivators for the European explorers of the 17th century to forego their search for a passage to Asia and focus instead on the natural resources offered by the North American continent. With fur at its zenith in European fashions, beaver pelt hats became a product lucrative enough to feed settlement of the “new” continent by England and France.

New coin is engraved in exquisite detail to celebrate one of Canada’s most important national icons. Сoin is a great gift and collectible to celebrate Canada’s natural wonders, Canadian fauna and the country’s unique iconography. This coin makes a prestigious addition to any collection focused around nature or Canadiana.

The 2014 200th Anniversary of Matthew Flinders Coin

The 2014 200th Anniversary of Matthew Flinders Coin

Pobjoy Mint announce the release of an attractive new coin on behalf of the Isle of Man which commemorates the 200th Anniversary of Matthew Flinders.

Captain Matthew Flinders was a prominent English navigator and cartographer which was the first to circumnavigate Australia and to identify it as a continent. He was additionally the first to have his Atlas of maps of Australia published. Born in March 1774, Flinders made three voyages to the southern ocean. During the second voyage it was confirmed that Van Diemen's Land, which is now Tasmania, was an island. After the trip his work had been noticed by Sir Joseph Banks and as a result, in January 1801, Flinders was provided command of the Investigator and promoted to Commander the following month.

Aboard the Investigator, Flinders began his expedition of the Australian coastline and continued around the coast preparing his charts as he went. After his return to England, Flinder's chart of Terra Australia was first published in January 1814. Admired in Australia and recognised as one of the best navigators in history, he died 200 years back in 1814 aged 40, the day after his book and atlas was published.
